What titles are displayed during the opening sequence?
During the opening sequence of “Parasite,” the titles displayed are the production company, director, movie title, and a list of featured actors. This sequence occurs while we observe a seemingly less fortunate family in their home. This is assumed by the socks we see hanging to dry (rather than using a dryer) and the struggle of finding Wi-Fi to use. Their financial status is also established by their clothing, we see it is old and dirty.
What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?
The images we can see being prioritized in the title sequence are one’s that establish the family we see in the film are having financial struggles. This gives context and the main characters of the film and also provides some insight into the characters' personal lives. Both things will help us to understand the plot of the film. The title sequence opens with just a black screen, followed by dirty socks drying with a busy city out of the window in the background, and then we see a family trying to get Wi-Fi.
How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?
The title sequence of “Parasite” features tension and a conflict, both of which are main elements of a thriller film, showing how the title sequence is contributing to the feeling of a thriller film. A generalized conflict we see the characters experiences is poor finances, mainly represented by having no Wi-Fi which led to the character's trying to steal their neighbors Wi-Fi. This created slight tension between the characters as we see them getting frustrated over the Wi-Fi problem.
