Mis-En-Scene:

  • Costume: For costumes in romance films, directors often choose to have the main character and love interest where nice, proper clothing such as elegant dresses and suits. Additionally, the color red is known to convey romance. With this, red clothing is something commonly observed in romantic films.

  • Lighting: The goal is romantic films is to create the feeling of intimacy and comfort, done by using warm and soft lighting. This can also be used to exaggerate that romantic feeling and really drive the emotion to the audience.

  • Acting: Common acting styles in romance films heavily rely on love interests being passionate and emotional with each other. This can include them having playful flirting and deep emotional vulnerability.

Editing

The editing in romance films is intended to help create emotional connections between characters. This can be done by cutting to a close-up to highlight intimacy and making longer shots to create a connection between the characters and audience.

Sound

Using strings and woodwind in instrumentals can help create a feeling of love and romance in a scene. Having music build with a scene can emanate the feeling of anticipation in a scene.

Films examples:

“10 Things I Hate About you” “Pretty Woman” “The Proposal”

What elements of the genre that you like and would use

if this was your genre?

Elements from a romance film I would like to include in my film is having music in scene build with the emotion as I feel like it can help to convey the anticipation and energy in a scene with the audience. I would also like to include are the lighting creating intimacy, only if they’re being to be an intimate moment in the film.

What elements of the genre do not appeal to you, and

you would not use if this was your genre

Although this is the romance genre, I wouldn’t want to create a film with a lot of intimacy or flirting in the film. This is mainly because it could create an uncomfortable feeling while filming or editing. I also don’t love using the color red in clothes as I feel it could sometimes look too harsh on camera. The evolution of rom-coms: Positive or negative? – The Hatchet
